Three sessions: October 30, November 6 & 13

Archaeology provides a context for events and people from the Hebrew Bible that can both support and challenge the text. In this series of classes, we will examine ancient Levantine societies at macro and micro scales—from statehood and population movements to identities and everyday life. We will also discuss how interpretations of texts from the Hebrew Bible have informed archaeology, geopolitics, and modern identity formation in the Middle East.

The topics will proceed as follows:

  1. What is “Biblical” Archaeology: Power, politics, and the practice of archaeology in the Middle East
  2. Exodus and the Emergence of Israel: Archaeological and historical evidence
  3. Life and Death in Iron Age Judah, with a focus on Biblical Miẓpah

Although the information will be presented in lecture format, questions and conversations are encouraged!
