We will study Parshat Bereshit not as a religious text, but as a text that was composed in a particular historical, cultural, and theological milieu, in order to discover and understand the origin of ideas that shaped, and still shape, 2500 years of Jewish life. In addition to reading parshat Bereshit, participants will be asked to read other short texts and brief essays in advance of each class.

Lavey Yitzchak Derby is a rabbi and teacher who has taught extensively throughout the country on subjects ranging from the history of Jewish ideas and rabbinic thought to Zohar and Kabbalah, Hasidism, contemporary Jewish spirituality, and meditation. To learn about all his programs, please visit
