The Way Out of No Way

Following on his film, The Third Harmony,” this presentation by nonviolence scholar Michael Nagler will open the window for us onto the inspiring developments in nonviolence theory and practice that have emerged over the last thirty or so years. Michael will trace its roots in Jewish tradition, describe ‘the state of the art’ right now, and the resources it offers us to get through our contemporary problems with creative tools that not only solve the immediate issues but put us on the path to lasting peace.

Michael Nagler, PhD, is professor emeritus at UC Berkeley, where he founded the Peace and Conflict Studies Program and taught upper-division courses on nonviolence, meditation and other subjects. He has spoken and written on peace and nonviolence for many years, and is president of the Metta Center for Nonviolence.

Among other recognitions, Michael received the prestigious Bajaj Award for Promoting Gandhian Values Outside India in 2007. He is the author of America Without Violence (Island Press, 1982), The Upanishads (with Sri Eknath Easwaran, Nilgiri Press, 1987), The Search for a Nonviolent Future (Inner Ocean Publishing) which won the 2002 American Book Award, The Nonviolence Handbook and The Third Harmony: Nonviolence and the New Story of Human Nature (Berrett-Koehler, 2020).  He also wrote and directed Metta’s documentary film with that title.

Michael has lived at the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation's community in Northern California since 1970.
