Rabbi's Tisch with Herb Behrstock - the Relevance and Effectiveness of the United Nations

Friday, January 13, 2023 20 Tevet 5783

6:15 PM - 8:00 PM

Please register below to attend in person.

At this talk, Herb will address the relevance and effectiveness of the United Nations related to crises and challenges that affect us in California, the USA and needs of people and countries globally.  He’ll review the UN’s sometimes contentious role weaving his 32 year career working for the UN, and subsequent leadership of the UN Association.

He’ll also relate to Jewish values and aspirations (including Tikkun Olam). Issues in his presentation, questions and discussion might encompass human rights, health and basic human needs, violence and war, climate change, Ukraine and the Middle East.  He’ll also introduce more about the objectives and work of the UN Association.

Herb Behrstock's interests and extensive expertise have been shaped by more than three decades of increasing policy and management responsibilities working with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).  Herb’s UN career included 16 years in UNDP Headquarters in New York overseeing development programs and aid coordination in Asia and Africa. Those assignments were supplemented by 16 years serving in 8 countries: China, Kazakhstan, Haiti, 3 African countries, Bhutan, and Gaza. This culminated as the United Nations Coordinator of Development Assistance simultaneously as director of UNDP operations, and management of development programs and staff.

Since his ‘so-called-retirement’ in 2003, Herb maintained his deep connections with the UN as a leader of the United Nations Association’s non-profit activities – in Northern California where he is currently Division President, and formerly as a representative on UNA’s National Council, and as President for 11 years of the East Bay Chapter.

Herb lives in Alameda with his talented wife, Dorie.  They have two girls who were born when Dorie and Herb resided in Africa.
