Congregation Shomrei Torah

Environmental Action

Shomrei Torah’s Environmental Action Committee encourages environmental stewardship and to promotes awareness and sound ecological practices within the synagogue, our congregation and the wider community.

In order to respond to the global challenges that we all face, the Committee focuses on four areas:

Green Shomrei Torah: Develop policies and practices that diminish the synagogue’s environmental footprint.

Education and Awareness: Educate members of the congregation about sound environmental practices.

Community Involvement: Work with other organizations in Sonoma County to advance the protection and sustainability of our resources and environment.

Advocacy: Advocate for governmental policies that improve environmental practices in the county and state.

If you are interested in joining the Environmental Action Committee, email the CST office.

CST’s Waste Management Program

As Guardians of the Torah (Shomrei Torah), we are implicitly Shomrei Adamah(Guardians of the Earth).  The Torah commands us to be good stewards and though it’s not easy to be green, if we each do our part, CST will become a lot greener and a little closer to becoming a zero waste synagogue!

CSA – Community Supported Agriculture

Join with other CST families who love to receive weekly boxes of fresh veggies direct from local farmers.

Singing Frogs Farm has partnered with CST since 2009. They are located just west of Sebastopol and have a unique hand-dug, compost-rich, and chemical free agriculture that generates tremendous production of tasty and healthy veggies and fruits.

Your CSA box is delivered to Shomrei Torah on Wednesdays, or may be picked up at the farm. SFF welcomes visitors on the farm, and have special events that include blueberry picking in early summer—a treat for the whole family. Besides a huge assortment of seasonal produce, they also offer eggs, brown rice, and olive oil.

If you want to split an order (alternating weeks usually) and need help finding a partner, or if you have questions, contact Rick Reisman at rickcath@sonic.net.  For more information or to sign up, visit Singing Frogs Farm.
