SHORTY: Shomrei Torah Temple Youth (SHORTY) is our youth group for 9th-12th graders. SHORTY is affiliated with the National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY). SHORTY holds monthly social events during the school year. No membership is required, some events have fees. SHORTY Board: The SHORTY Board plans monthly events for their peers. SHORTY Board meets monthly to plan events and develop leadership skills. Teens that join the SHORTY Board commit to staying on the board for the entire academic year and are expected to attend meetings unless school activities preclude attendance. Madrichim Program: Our Madrichim Program brings energy and enthusiasm to our religious school. Madrichim volunteer their first year and are paid in subsequent years. This Madrichim Program is a great opportunity to gain job experience. Madrichim are expected to attend all classes unless school activities preclude attendance. Tzedek Social Justice Fellowship (new this year): Are you passionate about social justice? The Tzedek Social Justice Fellowship meets during the fall and winter to learn about Social Justice. The cornerstone of this program is the L’Taken Social Justice Seminar, a four day trip to Washington DC that brings together hundreds of Jewish teens from across the country. The program concludes with the a family shabbat and oneg. Due to the cohort nature of this program, teens that participate in this program are expected to attend all programs, unless school activities preclude attendance. Ruach Teen Band (new this year): Do you play a musical instrument? Do you enjoy singing? Ruach (hebrew for spirit) is our Teen Music Ensemble that performs periodically throughout the year at Shomrei Torah and community events. While there is no audition for this ensemble, instrumentalists that play in this ensemble are expected to have intermediate to advanced technical proficiency on their instrument. Vocalists are expected to be able to match pitch and have experience singing with instrumental accompaniment. While it is preferred for musicians to consistently participate in our calendared performances, teens can select performances based on their availability. Kehillah: Led by Rick Concoff, Kehillah meets during the academic year to discuss teen-related issues through a Jewish lens. We socialize, connect, and eat together. Contact Rick Concoff, Kehillah Educator, if you are interested in joining Kehillah.
