Forum on Antisemitism with JCRC Rep Paula Simon

Sunday, February 23, 2020 28 Sh'vat 5780

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Please RSVP.

The reported rise in written and verbal expressions of anti-Semitism, white nationalism and violence directed at Jews is anxiety producing.  Our sensitivities are heightened, and for many younger Jews, the first time they have seriously questioned Jewish individual and communal safety and security. This program is intended to address the following questions:

Have we been too complacent as a community, believing anti-Semitism, was diminishing?

Should we be panicked now, particularly following the heinous attacks at the Tree of Life in Pittsburgh or Chabad in Poway?

Is this new anti-Semitism or the same old Antisemitism?

Is there actually an increase in incidents or perhaps just more reporting due to heightened awareness or reporting?

How and where do we target our communal time and energy given the enormity of the topic?

What can we do to respond?

Paula Simon Brief Bio:

Paula happily retired and relocated to Santa Rosa in 2010 from Milwaukee, WI, where she had spent twenty one years working for the Milwaukee Jewish Council for Community Relations, thirteen of those years as the agency’s Executive Director.
She left behind her snow blower and boots and acquired a swimming pool brush and a kayak. She could not leave behind her passion for working in the Jewish community nor adjust well to retirement, so since 2013 she has served in multiple capacities at the Jewish Community Relations Council of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin, Sonoma, Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, including Director of Operations and Special Projects, Interim Grants Manager and Writer and North Bay Regional Director. Currently Paula is the JCRC’s North Bay consultant for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement.

Paula received her undergraduate degree in Social Welfare from UC Berkeley, and earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work as well as a Master’s Degree in Jewish Communal Service from the USC-Hebrew Union College Joint Masters Degree program.
