Congregation Shomrei Torah

Rabbi's Tisch with Eric Goodman - Jews and Baseball

Friday, April 4, 2025 6 Nisan 5785

6:15 PM - 8:00 PM

Eric Goodman will be talking about and reading from Curveball, a multi-generational novel about Jews in baseball. Curveball, tells the story of Jess Singer's first season pitching for the New York Mets. A lefthander with a great curve, Jess is also a closeted gay man, in love with his catcher.

Curveball is the sequel to Goodman's third novel, In Days of Awe (1991), in which the protagonist was Jess's father, "Jewish Joe" Singer, who also pitched for the Mets. Together, the two Singer novels explore masculinity in the 21st Century, Jews as athletes and outsiders.

Eric was the long-term Director of Creative Writing at Miami University of Ohio. He now lives seven months a year in Santa Rosa. A portion of book sales will be donated to Shomrei Torah.
