Congregation Shomrei Torah

Trip to Glide San Francisco

Sunday, July 23, 2023 5 Av 5783

9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Join Rabbi George for a church service at GLIDE Memorial that includes great music and a wonderful choir, followed by a walking tour of the Tenderloin in San Francisco.

This trip is an extension of the Civil Rights trip to the South taken earlier this year by Rabbi George and congregants. Attendees will attend a church service at GLIDE Memorial, a hope-filled, outreach-focused, spirited and inclusive congregation located in the midst of the Tenderloin. A walking tour of the Tenderloin neighborhood immediately following the service will inform attendees about the challenges and opportunities that exist in this area, through the stories of the people who have helped shape the neighborhood, and also those who live and work there today.

The walking tour may be difficult for some. Attendees could potentially see illicit drug use, extreme poverty, and/or individuals who may be experiencing a mental health crisis.

Itinerary for our trip:

11:00am: Service at GLIDE

12:30pm-2pm: Tenderloin/Mid-Market Walking Tour (90 minutes)

$18 per registrant. Costs go directly towards a love offering at GLIDE and a tip for our tour guide.

They are rooted in empowerment, recovery, and personal transformation. Our values inspire and guide our behaviors. They are the ground we stand on. For more information about Glide, click here.

The Original Tenderloin/Mid-Market Walking Tour takes you on a journey of discovery, revealing the true nature of a much-maligned, often avoided and almost always overlooked neighborhood. The thirty-one blocks of the Tenderloin district are the beating heart of a city peopled by immigrants and iconoclasts, artists and activists, sinners and saints. Its history plays an integral part in the growth and development of the City, the Bay Area, California and the US. Our Tenderloin/Mid-Market Walking Tours have guided over 45,000 people through tours of the Tenderloin. The tours have brought people into the Tenderloin neighborhood to inform, entertain, and sometimes completely astound them with visions and stories of the people who have helped shape the neighborhood, and also those who live and work there today. This is an amazing part of San Francisco. The tour tells you all about it.
