In 2016, Dani Shapiro unexpectedly discovered through DNA testing that the man who had raised her, and whom she dearly loved, was not her biological father, calling into question her place in the Jewish lineage that was at the core of her identity.  She is still navigating the resulting journey of discovery, which inspired her bestselling memoir, Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy, Paternity, and Love.

The questions Dani has confronted  speak to all of us: “What makes a person a person? What combination of memory, history, imagination, experience, subjectivity, genetic substance, and that ineffable thing called the soul makes us who we are? Is who we are the same as who we believe ourselves to be?”

Rabbi George will join Dani in conversation, sharing some of his experience with folks who have been impacted by DNA testing and related discoveries, as well as the growing phenomenon of donor-assisted parentage.

If you enjoy Dani's talk, please join us at the Jewish Literary Circle on June 17th at 6:15 PM as we discuss her book in more detail.
